  I left mechanical engineering a long time ago. But I will try to answer based on my memories. The best book I used was the one written by J. E. Shigley. But the book I used most was by V. B. Bhandari. And it was very good. Khurmi's book had the qu. Preparing an Engineering Design The following basic steps should be followed for all engineering designs (regardless of complexity): 1. Identification of the problem and its scope. 2. Site Investigation. 3. Collection of basic design data. 4. Assembly and analysis of data. 5. Design. 6. Preparation of plans and specifications. 7. Review and File Size: 2MB.

All design work is based on knowledge of materials and components, but this knowledge must be alive especially in our subconscious mind. The second part of this book gives some examples of the nature of knowledge usable in creative engineering design.
